HOW DO SOLAR PANELS WORK?
Solar panels convert sunlight into electricity to use or store in your home, it’s as simple as that!
The energy converted from solar panels can be used in your home or stored in a battery to be used at a time of your choice. If you have surplus electricity, this can be exported to the grid using the Smart Export Guarantee or stored in a battery.

Roof Integrated Solar PV Installations
Our preferred products are Viridian Clearline Fusion
In roof Solar panels are a perfect option for new build properties and customers looking to retrofit with an aesthetically pleasing panel that are made flush with the roof tiles. It is more cost effective than tiling the property during the initial build stages and you have the benefit of generating solar energy to store or use in your property, not to forget a return on your investment over the lifetime of the panels.
JDM Earth have worked with property developers on high volume development sites and on high value properties for many years and understand the requirement for excellent workmanship and service along with meeting development timescales.
On Roof Solar PV Installations
On roof solar panels are secured on a sloping roof or flat roof. On a sloping roof they are placed on top of your current roof tiles and secured by a hook and rail system. On a flat roof they are can be secured by a ballasted mounting system. They make excellent use of otherwise empty space and the installation is cost effective.

OUR PROCESS
STAGE ONE
STAGE TWO
The initial proposal will include the system design, costings, estimated reduction in electricity bills, how long it will take to pay back your investment and an idea of what your return on investment will be over a 20 year period.
STAGE THREE
You will receive a call from our technical team who will talk you through the proposal and make any amendments required. If you have any questions, they can be answered during this call.
STAGE FOUR
STAGE FIVE
Once you are happy with the proposal we will complete our pre-checks. Your deposit will be protected in line with RECC guidance, structural surveys (if required) will be completed and G99 applications are submitted for inverters over 3.68kW.
STAGE SIX
Scaffolding will be erected and your installation will be completed our experienced and competent team.
STAGE SEVEN
Compliance – Your installation will be registered with the MCS, Distribution Network Operator and Building Compliance. You will also receive a detailed handover pack including the information on your installation.
Q&A
Can you provide a free design and proposal?
Absolutely! To request your free proposal, simply contact us. We’re excited to help you explore the ideal solar solutions for your requirements.
Do you offer deposit protection?
Certainly! Deposit protection is an important aspect of our commitment to our customers. In line with the MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) and RECC (Renewable Energy Consumer Code) guidelines, we offer deposit protection to ensure that your investment is safeguarded.
How does solar power work?
In summary, you capture sunlight with solar panels. The panels are installed with an inverter that transforms the electricity from direct current (DC) to alternating current (AC), converting it into electricity that can be used to power homes, businesses, and various electrical devices. Excess electricity can be sent to the grid, and batteries can store surplus power for use at night or during cloudy periods. This sustainable energy source is environmentally friendly and reduces reliance on fossil fuels, making it a crucial component of clean energy solutions.
Do I need battery storage?
Battery storage is an optional but valuable component of a solar power system that depends on your individual goals and circumstances. Here’s a close look at when battery storage may be beneficial;
Energy Independence; If you aim to reduce your reliance on the grid and achieve a higher level of energy independence, battery storage can be a good choice. It allows you to store excess electricity generated during the day for use at night or during cloudy periods, reducing your dependence on grid power.
Backup Power: Some battery storage systems can serve as backup power sources during grid outages. In the event of a blackout, you can continue to power essential appliances and maintain basic comforts, ensuring your family’s safety and convenience.
Optimizing Self-Consumption: Battery storage allows you to maximise self-consumption of the solar energy you generate. Instead of sending excess energy back to the grid, you can store it for later use, further increasing your energy efficiency.
Time-of-Use Savings: When using split tariffs, batteries can help you save money. You can store energy during off- peak periods when rates are lower, and utilise it during peak-rate hours, leading to reduced electricity expenses.
Environmental impact Battery storage can play a role in adopting a greener way of living. When you utilise stored solar energy instead of relying on grid power, you’re actively reducing your carbon footprint and decreasing dependence on non-renewable energy sources.”
Ultimately, the decision to include battery storage in your solar system depends on your energy goals, budget, and location. To determine if it’s the right choice for you, please feel free to schedule a call with one of our technical team.
How long will it it take to pay off my system?
The time it takes to pay off your solar PV system in the UK depends on various factors, including the cost of your system, your energy usage, location, shading factors the efficiency of your panels, and the incentives available to you. On average, many homeowners in the UK find that their solar PV systems pay for themselves within 6 to 12 years. However, this can vary widely.
We offer a free proposal service that will take into account your individual information and provide a customised payback timeline. We will also take into account income you might generate from selling excess electricity back to the grid through the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) scheme.
Do I need planning permission?
In most cases, you do not need planning permission in the UK for solar panels. The installation of solar panels is typically considered a ‘permitted development’ and is subject to certain conditions and limits. However, it’s important to ensure that the installation complies with these conditions and does not significantly alter the appearance of your property. If your property is located in a conservation area, is a listed building, a flat roof or has additional restrictions, it is likely that you will need to apply for planning permissions.
Do Solar panels still generate on a cloudy day?
Yes, solar panels can still generate electricity on a cloudy day. While their energy production is highest in direct sunlight, modern solar panels are designed to capture diffuse sunlight and can generate power even when the sky is overcast. While the energy output may be lower on cloudy days compared to sunny ones, your solar system can still contribute to your electricity needs, making it a valuable investment in the UK’s climate.
Do you complete a structural survey?
We conduct a structural survey for solar PV installations where appropriate specifically on non-truss roofs to assess their suitability. This step is essential to guarantee the safety and longevity of your solar system and is included within the cost we provide.
Can you explain G98 and G99 DNO applications?
G99 When the inverter capacity for a solar installation exceeds 3.68kW, a G99 DNO application is necessary. This application must be submitted and approved before we can proceed with the installation. In some cases, grid upgrades may be needed to facilitate the installation, and there could be associated costs. We will inform you if such upgrades are required, ensuring you have all the information needed to make an informed decision.
G98 A G98 application serves as a post-installation notification to the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) for solar PV systems with inverters of 3.68kW or less. In cases where the inverter capacity is 3.68kW or less, there’s no need to seek pre-installation authorization; the G98 notification is submitted after the installation is completed.
Are you MCS Registered?
Yes, we are registered with the MCS and RECC for both solar PV and battery storage.
What is the Smart Export Guarantee?
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) is a UK government scheme that allows owners of small-scale renewable energy systems to earn money by exporting surplus electricity back to the grid. Under SEG, eligible households and businesses receive competitive payments for their excess energy, promoting renewable energy adoption while providing financial rewards.
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) payments vary based on your energy supplier and your export volume. Contact your energy provider for specific rates and calculate potential earnings with your export meter. Currently rates are ranging from 2p to 15p per kWh.
